Warning! this walkthrough is very long dont try to beat the game in one day.

Welcome to the World of Pok?mon
When you first begin the game, you'll meet the always cheerful Birch, Professor of Pok?mon. He'll walk you through what you need to get started. By answering questions with him, you'll determine if your character is a girl or boy, and what your character's name will be. There are no significant differences between being a boy or girl, except for starting position, and of course, appearance. As far as names go, you can choose your own, or select from a pre-made list.

When you're done with Birch, a truck will drive you to Littleroot Town. Get out of it and you'll be greeted by your mother. After a short conversation, you'll be left alone to explore your room. Go up the stairs to get there. Once in your room, check out what's there. Move to the clock and press A to access it, then move the D-Pad left and right to set it. Check your desk, if you want. The PC here is not of much use yet. When you're done poking around, head downstairs. Your Mom will call you over to see a TV show that your father is on. He's a Gym Leader and is currently being interviewed. She tells you to go visit Prof. Birch. His house is next door.

The PC here is not of much use yet. When you're done poking around, head downstairs. Your Mom will call you over to see a TV show that your father is on. He's a Gym Leader and is currently being interviewed. She tells you to go visit Prof. Birch. His house is next door, but he's not home.

Instead, his wife is there. She tells you to go up and meet her kid. The kid is the opposite of you... if you chose a boy, it's a girl, and vice versa. This person will be your Rival throughout the rest of the game. You'll have four battles in all, and each time it'll get markedly more difficult. Gauge your progress in the game with these fights. If you have a relatively easy time in trainer battles, you're doing well.

Once you're done, head down to the building to the south. This is Prof. Birch's Lab. The lab assistant there tells you that Birch is out doing fieldwork. Leave the Lab and head north to Route 101. As you get near the route, a kid will tell you there's commotion ahead. Check it out!

Route 101

On Route 101, Prof. Birch is being harassed by a wild Zigzagoon. He tells you to search his bag for a Pok?mon. There are three choices here, and they will determine what your initial Pok?mon will be. The choices are:

Treecko: Wood Gecko Pok?mon-- Grass Type
Torchic: Chick Pok?mon-- Fire Type
Mudkip: Mud Fish-- Water/Ground Type

Mudkip, although unpopular, is your best choice, simply because it is a double threat. Its mix of Ground and Water moves make it a brutal foe. Mudkip also matches up against early Gyms the best. However, any of the three are good, and all evolve into powerful Pok?mon. Choose one, then go into battle with the wild Zigzazoon.

When you best it, Prof. Birch will thank you and take you back to his Lab. Then he'll tell you to go meet his child on Route 103. To get there, head up Route 101 to Oldale Town.

Oldale Town
This is the first major city you'll run across. All of the big cities in the game have a Pok?mon Center and Pok?mon Mart. At the Pok?mon Center, you can rest your tired Pok?mon, refilling health and curing all status problems. You can also store and withdraw Pok?mon and get Mail on the PC. For more info on Pok?mon Centers, visit the Basics section of this guide.

As you leave the Pok?mon Center, head over to the lady in white standing near the building to the east. In fact, make sure you always visit every building and talk to everyone in every town. They'll often give you free Items and TMs for free. She'll take you up to the Pok?mon Mart and give you a Potion as a promotional Item. Head inside to see what else the store offers.

Potion: 300
Antidote: 100
Paralyz Heal: 200
Awakening: 250

Once you get your first Pok? Ball as a gift, Pok? Balls will also become available at this store, for 200. When you're done at the store, head north to Route 103.

Route 103

Before you head up to meet your rival, you'll want to level up your Pok?mon. Spend some time searching the tall grass to trigger random Pok?mon battles. Defeat the Pok?mon you rustle up to gain experience, which leads to higher levels. If you get hurt, run back to town and heal at the Pok?mon Center. When you are ready to take on your Rival, move all the way north. Talk to him/her to trigger the battle.

Rival Battle #1
Each time you fight your Rival gets progressively harder. This, however, is a fairly easy battle, especially if you've taken time to level up. Level 8 or above will put you at a nice advantage here. The Pok?mon your Rival sends out depends on the Pok?mon you selected at the beginning of the game. Here's how it works:

(If you picked) Treecko
(Your Rival will send out) Torchic: Level 5

Torchic
Mudkip: Level 5

Mudkip
Treecko: Level 5

Since neither of you have Type-specific moves yet, you have the upper hand in this battle. In the future, however, you'll have to pay attention to what Type your opponent sends out and try to counter appropriately. After the battle (as with every trainer fight), you'll get money for winning.

When the battle concludes, head back to the Lab. The Professor will give you a Pok?dex, which will allow you to track all of the Pok?mon you've met and caught in the game. One of the goals of the game is to completely fill your Pok?dex. This can lead to special rewards from some of the characters in the game. After you get the Pok?dex, your Rival will give you Pok? Ball. Use it to catch wild Pok?mon. For more info on how to catch Pok?mon, refer to the Basics section of this guide.

Once you're done at the lab, leave the building and your mother will stop you. She'll give you Running Shoes. They'll help you move faster whenever you're in the outside world. Press B to use them while walking to pick up the pace. Once you have the shoes, run back to Oldale town (buy some Pok?balls, too) and move west, down Route 102.

Route 102

Route 102 is where you'll encounter your first non-Rival trainer fights. These are like regular wild Pok?mon encounters, except that you will often have to fight several Pok?mon in a row, and will be rewarded with money if you triumph. From now on, whenever a trainer battle occurs, we'll note it in the guide like this:

Trainer
Pok?mon: Level *
Pok?mon: Level *

There are too many trainer battles in the game to give strategy for each. For tips on battling, check out the type of Pok?mon you're about to battle, then refer to the Battling section of this guide for tips on which Pok?mon to send out when. On this stretch of road, you'll encounter the following trainers:

Youngster Calvin
Poochyena: Level 5

Bug Catcher Rick
Wurmple: Level 4
Wurmple: Level 4

Youngster Allen
Poochyena: Level 5
Taillow: Level 3

Near Youngster Allen are a pair of trees. Pick the Berries on them (Oran and Pecha) and put them in your bag.

Lass Tiana
Zigzagoon: Level 4
Shroomish: Level 4

Directly south of Tiana, off a short ledge is a Potion. Grab it, then head west to Petalburg City.

Petalburg City
Petalburg City is the site of the game's first Gym, but you won't be able to battle there until returning later. Heal your Pok?mon at the Center, then talk to the man in the upper right corner. He'll ask you to give him your Trainer Profile. Combine a bunch of phrases to make a statement about yourself. Mine was "I AM THE EXCITING BABE." If you caught a lot of Pok?mon on the previous route, you may want to deposit some in the computer.

The Pok?mon Mart is northeast of the Center. Check out what they have to offer:

Pok? Ball: 200
Potion: 300
Antidote: 100
Paralyz Heal: 100
Awakening: 250
Escape Rope: 550
Repel: 350
X Speed: 350
X Attack: 500
X Defend: 550
Orange Mail: 50

Grab what you need and move on. Potions and Antidotes are handy, and you'll want to have a decent supply of Pok? Balls before you move to the next bit of wild wilderness.

On the west side of town, you'll meet a guy who will take you to the Gym. Head inside to find your father, Norman. He's pleased you've become a trainer like him. As you're chatting, a kid walks up and asks for a Pok?mon. His name is Wally, and he needs your help! You'll have to accompany Wally to the tall grass, where he'll use a Zigzagoon to catch a Ralts. If you haven't already caught a Pok?mon, this will show you how.

When he catches his Pok?mon, you'll both head back to the Gym. He'll explain how to become a great trainer. Once you've talked to your dad again, head over to Wally's house, which is just west of the Gym. His parents will tell you he's been sent to Verdanturf Town. Eventually, once you come back to town and triumph at the Gym, you can visit this house again to get a special HM. For now, though, head west to Route 104.

Route 104
Wild Pok?mon: Zigzagoon, Wurmple, Wingull, Taillow, Poochyena

Route 104 is part beach, part wilderness. First off, head south to the beach to clean up the trainer along the water's edge.

Youngster Billy
Seedot: Level 7
Zigzazoon: Level 6

Fisherman Darian
Magikarp: Level 9

Go north along the beach until you get to some steps. This leads up to Mr. Briney's house. Nobody's home for now. Go north on the path to find some Berry Trees (Pecha and Oran). Soon thereafter, another trainer fight awaits.

Lady Cindy
Zigzagoon: Level 7

As you move north from Cindy, you'll be in Petalburg Woods.

Petalburg Woods
Wild Pok?mon: Wurmple, Taillow, Slakoth, Silcoon, Shroomish, Maril

When you first arrive in the Woods, go east through the tall grass. Move through the small fence to the south to temporarily go back to Route 104.

Route 104
Here, you'll meet a girl who will tell you not to use Pok? Balls in the midst of battle. South of her is a Pok? Ball. Grab it and head north back into the Woods.

Petalburg Woods
Move back to the west and head north to find the first trainer on the route.

Bug Catcher Lyle
Wurmple: Level 3
Wurmple: Level 3
Wurmple: Level 3
Wurmple: Level 3

North of Bug Catcher Lyle is a Paralyz Heal. Grab it and move on. As you encounter a Devon Researcher, he asks you if you've seen a Shroomish in the Woods. As you're talking, a Team Grunt appears and asks the guy to hand over some papers. The Researcher hides behind you, and you'll have to take on the Grunt.

Team Grunt
Poochyena: Level 9

After you beat the Grunt, he'll run off to Rustboro. As a reward for saving him, the Researcher gives you a Great Ball, which gives you a better shot at catching higher-level wild Pok?mon. Keep moving down the path to find another trainer.

Bug Catcher James
Nincada: Level 6
Nincada: Level 6

North of James is an Ether, which restores move PP during battle. Since you don't know how to Cut yet (there are trees to the east that can be cut), head north back onto Route 104.

Route 104
Once on Route 104, you'll find a pair of trees (Cheri and Oran) , and a little boy who gives you TM09 (Bullet Seed). Just north of here is the Pretty Petal Flower Shop. Here, you can learn all the basics about Berries. Take good note of what people tell you. One of the ladies inside gives you the Wailmer Pail, which will allow you to water seeds you plant. The young girl here will also give you a Cheri Berry. From the Flower Shop, move east to tangle with another couple of trainers.

Rich Boy Winston
Zigzagoon: Level 7

Lass Haley
Lotad: Level 6
Shroomish: Level 6

Past Lass Haley is a tree guarding a Dire Hit. Come back here when you get Cut to collect it. For now, though, move across the bridge and take on the twins. This is the first simultaneous battle of the game. You'll have to send out two Pok?mon at once for this battle, so organize your creatures before you get in the trainers' sight. In multiple battles like this, each of your Pok?mon get a round of attacks, and you can focus your attacks on one specific Pok?mon, or attack both of the opponents' Pok?mon separately.

Twins Gina & Mia
Lotad: Level 6
Seedot: Level 6

After you cross, you'll run into another trainer. Since the trainer's Magikarp don't use any attack that can hurt you, send out your weak Pok?mon to level up here.

Fisherman Ivan
Magikarp: Level 6
Magikarp: Level 6
Magikarp: Level 7

Once you've defeated the trainer, grab the Berries from the nearby trees (Cheri and Leppa), then talk to the old woman to get a Chesto Berry. Stick to the right side of the path, and cut inside the fence of Rustboro City to get an X Defend. Then enter the city via the main path.

Rustboro City
Rustboro City is home to the first Gym battle you'll take part in. Examine the city before you head to the Gym, though. The building just west of the entrance is quarters for those working at Devon Corporation. On the second floor, talk to the little boy to get a Premier Ball.

The Pok?mon Mart is just north of the city's entrance. It contains the following goods:

Pok? Ball: 200
Potion: 300
Super Potion: 700
Antidote: 100
Paralyz Heal: 200
Escape Rope: 550
Repel: 350
X Speed: 350
X Attack: 500
X Defend: 550

Grab what you need at the Mart, then head north to the Pok?mon Center. To the west of the Center is a house. Talk to the man there to get HM01 (Cut). You won't be able to use it outside of battle until you beat the Gym Leader in town. Once you have Cut, head east past the Center to the Pok?mon Trainer's school. Talk to the teacher here to get the Quick Claw.

Now head north to the Gym. Instead of going in, go inside the building to the right. There is a boy here who wants to trade. If you have a Slakoth, trade it for the Fighting-Type Makuhita. Then it's time to head to the Gym!

Pok?mon Gym Badge #1
Reward: Stone Badge
Gym Leader: Roxanne
The first Gym is not too tough, provided you have a good Water or Grass-Type Pok?mon. The dominant Type here is Rock , so avoid using Fire and Flying Types. If you chose Mudkip or Treecko and leveled it up, you'll be set. If you took Torchic, you'll want to have captured a Lotad and leveled it up so that it knows Absorb (Level 7), and also teach it Bullet Seed (TM09). With a souped-up Lotad and (hopefully) your new Makuhita, this Gym will go smoothly.

Youngster Josh
Geodude: Level 10

Youngster Tommy
Geodude: Level 8
Geodude: Level 8

Hiker Marc
Geodude: Level 8
Geodude: Level 8

Gym Leader Roxanne
Geodude: Level 12
Geodude: Level 12
Nosepass: Level 15

Since all of these creatures are of the same type, the fight will go fairly fast. Once you've beaten Roxanne, you'll get your first badge, in addition to TM39 (Rock Tomb). Yippee!

Rustboro City Once you triumph at the Rustboro City Gym, step outside and you'll see a robbery in progress. Follow the path up and talk to the Researcher who you helped earlier. He's been robbed by Team Aqua. The thief fled down Route 116, so head that way.

Route 116

There are two trainers in the first part of the path, on high and one low. Take the low road and grab the Repel, then go after the trainer.

Bug Catcher Jose
Wurmple: Level 8
Nincada: Level 8

The high path has this trainer:

Youngster Joey
Machop: Level 9

When you finish both fights, head east for a battle with:

School Kid Karen
Shroomish: Level 9

Youngster Johnson
Shroomish: Level 8
Lotad: Level 8

Hiker Clark
Geodude: Level 8

Hiker Devan
Geodude: Level 8
Geodude: Level 8

After you've Bullet Seeded Devan and Clark back to the stone age, move up and talk to the man standing near the house. He'll tell you that someone is creating an uproar in the tunnel. You'll have to go through soon, but for now, head to the west, and use your new Cut skill to move down the path through the trees. Here, you will find more trainers.

School Kid Jerry
Ralts: Level 9

Lass Janice
Marill: Level 9

Lady Sarah and Rich Boy Dawson Combo
Lotad: Level 8
Zigzazoon: Level 8
Poochyena: Level 8
Zigzazoon: Level 8

On the western end of this tree path is a grove full of Berries (Chesto and Pinap), as well as an Ether. On the eastern side of hte path you'll find a potion. Once you collect that stuff, head past the house to the east. Here, you'll find an old man at the entrance to a cave. He's lost his beloved Peeko, and needs help getting it back. Head inside the cave to see what you can do.

Rusturf Tunnel

You'll see the culprit almost immediately. Before you take him on, though, grab the Pok? Ball north of the entrance. Then show that hoodlum what for!

Team Grunt
Poochyena: Level 11

Once you beat up the Grunt, he'll drop the Devon Goods he stole, and Peeko will be saved as well. Talk about two birds with one Pok?mon! You'll learn that the man you helped is actually Mr. Briney, whose home you visited earlier. Briney will take off with Peeko... but you'll be seeing him soon! Leave the tunnel. Outside, climb the stairs cut into the rock to grab an X Special, then go talk to the men in the house. They'll give you insight as to where to go next. Head back to Rustboro City.

Rustboro City
Back in RC, you'll meet up with the Devon Researcher again. When you show him that you got the Goods back, he'll give you a Great Ball. Go with him to the Devon Corporation's third floor. He asks you to deliver the parcel you retrieved to the Shipyard in Slateport City. Then he takes you to the President. He asks you if you can stop in Dewford Town to deliver a Letter to Steven. He gives you the Pok?nav for doing the favor.

The Pok?nav, which can be found in the Start Menu, allows you to see a map of all Hoenn. In addition, you can check your Pok?mon's Condition and see who you've battled (and who wants to battle again) with the Trainer's Eyes feature. Handy, indeed. Leave the Devon Corp building and head back to Petalburg Woods. On your way out, your Rival will challenge you for the second time.

Rival Battle #2
This battle can be tough, so make sure you bring Pok?mon that match up well against what your rival has. This time around, your rival will have two Pok?mon.

Mudkip
Wingull: Level 13
Treecko: Level 15

Torchic
Torkoal or Slugma: Level 13
Mudkip: Level 15

Treecko
Lotad: Level 13
Torchic: Level 15

Route 104/ Petalburg Woods
On the way back, cut the tree down near the bridge to grab the Dire Hit. Then go down to the Woods and cut the two trees that bar the path to the east. Follow the path to reach a girl who gives you the Miracle Seed. On a ledge to the east, you'll discover a Great Ball. Leap down to the area to the south and search the tall grass for an X Attack. Then go to Mr. Briney's, south of Petalburg Woods on Route 104.

Route 104/ Route 105/ Route 106
Go talk to Mr. Briney and he'll ask if you want to set sail for Dewford. You'll get into his boat and follow Route 105 all the way to Dewford Town. Later on, once you've learned Surf, you'll want to come back and explore Route 105. But that's for later. Right now, explore Dewford Town!

Dewford Town
Dewford Town is home to the second Gym Badge. However, before you can battle at the Gym, you need to give Steven the letter you're carrying. Head immediately into the closest building to get the Silk Scarf.

Once you have it, move south to talk to the fisherman. He'll give you the Old Rod, which will allow you to fish for Water-Type Pok?mon. To fish, walk up next to the water and use the Rod. If you'll be using it a lot, register the Item from the pause menu, so you only have to press SEL whenever you want to use it. When a fish bites, press A to hook it. Once you do, a normal Pok?mon battle will commence. Catch all of the fishy Pok?mon you can!

After you get the Rod, go to the building north of the Pok?mon Center. Outside is a guy who asks you what's trendy. Tell him what he's saying isn't hip and happening, and he'll ask you what is. Come up with a phrase that he'll utter instead. Give him something incredibly stupid to say, then move into the building to the north. These people have been infected with your phrase now, too. Once you're done there, head to the north side of town and take on the trainers... or go to the Gym right away. It's up to you, and depends if you have a leveled-up Flying-Type in your possession.

Fisherman Ned
Tentacool: Level 11

Fisherman Elliot
Magikarp: Level 10
Tentacool: Level 7
Magikarp: Level 10

Once you best the fishermen, enter the cave on the west side of the beach.

Granite Cave

When you arrive in the cave, a friendly hiker will give you HM05 (Flash). This will help you see in the dark cave. Teach it to a Pok?mon once you get the Knuckle Badge to see in dark caves.

You can still forge on here and deliver the letter to Steven, even though you don't yet have Flash working... It will just be more difficult. Head west and grab the Escape Rope. Then go down the nearby ladder. On the next level down, search one of the southern passages for a Pok? Ball. In the bottom right corner of the level, you'll discover another down ladder.

On the third level down, head all the way west to find a set of stairs. Walk up them, then move all the way right to find a ladder. Go up it, then move a couple squares left and go up another. Back on the main level, move all the way to the west to find a cave entrance. Head inside and talk to Steven. Give him the Letter, and he'll give you TM47 (Steel Wing). Teach this to a Flying-Type Pok?mon before your battle with this town's Gym Leader for a serious edge. To finish exploring the cave, you need to come back with a Mach Bike. Once you do, you'll be able to scale the sandy slope on the second level and gain access to a Repel and Rare Candy you would not otherwise get. Exit the cave for now and head to the Gym.

Pok?mon Gym #2
Reward: Knuckle Badge
Gym Leader: Brawly

It doesn't really matter if you tackle this Gym before or after you deliver the letter to Steven. But doing it afterwards will guarantee that your Pok?mon will all be a little tougher.

This Gym is full of Fighting-Type Pok?mon. What does that mean? Use Flying-Type Pok?mon for the best effect. If you don't have one from before, go get a Wingull or Taillow and level it up to at least Level 12 and use its Peck or Wing Attack moves to wreak havoc on this Gym. You can also use Psychic-Type Pok?mon here to good effect.

This Gym is dark, but as you defeat each consecutive trainer, the circle of light will grow slightly. Head right to begin the first fight.

If you have enough chutzpah to put Brawly down, you'll earn the handy Knuckle Badge, which makes all Pok?mon up to Level 30 give you props. It also allows you to use Flash outside of battle, as promised. You'll also get the fabulous TM08 (Bulk Up), which raises attack and defense stats during battle. Now... it's back to the Briney waves!

Dewford Town/ Route 107/ Route 108
Go talk to Briney again, and ask him to sail to Slateport this time. You still have an errand there. Again, you'll pass through several routes. Make sure you return to them in order to search fun stuff like the Abandoned Ship and battle trainers who are afloat.

Route 109
Route 109 is comprised of the beach and water directly south of Slateport City. When you learn Surf, make sure you come here and check out the islands south of the peninsula for even more trainer battles and a PP Up. For now, though, clean the beach of trainer scum.

Sailor Huey
Machop: Level 12
Wingull: Level 12

Near Sailor Huey is a pair of kids with flotation rings. Get the Soft Sand from them, then continue your conquest of the beach.

Tuber Simon
Azurill: Level 12

When all three trainers fall, talk to the shop owner and he'll reward you with a sixer of Soda Pop. Now head up the stairs to the north and begin to explore the city.

Slateport City
As you enter the city, you'll notice an open-air market on the western edge of town. The merchants here all specialize in different wares. Here's what they sell:

Doll Merchant
Azurill Doll: 3000
Marill Doll: 3000
Skitty Doll: 3000

Energy Guru
Protein: 9800
Iron: 9800
Carbos: 9800
Zinc: 9800
Calcium: 9800
HP Up: 9800

If you have a super-energetic Pok?mon as the lead member of your party, the woman next to the Energy Guru will give you an Effort Ribbon. Talk to the man at the north end of the market. He'll tell you to return when you know the TM Secret Power. When you get it, come back and you'll get a nice bargain. If you talk to the person across from that merchant, they will give you a Powder Jar and tell you about crushing berries to make medicines.

When you exit the north end of the market, the Pok?mon Mart will be right there. Head inside to find these things for sale:

Pok? Ball: 200
Great Ball: 600
Potion: 300
Super Potion: 700
Antidote: 100
Paralyz Heal: 200
Escape Rope: 550
Repel: 350
Harbor Mail: 50

Buy some Harbor Mail from the Pok?mon Mart for a future trade, at the very least. The building to the west of the Pok?mon Mart is home to the Pok?mon Fan Club. Talk to the Chairman who is sitting on the couch. He will tell you to feed your Pok?mon more Pok?blocks. You'll get to do that soon in the Contest Hall, so don't fret. Also, be sure to talk to the woman at the far end of the room. She'll examine your Pok?mon to determine if they love you, and then reward you with a Soothe Bell if she likes what she sees. To guarantee a reward, feed your Pok?mon lots of Pok?blocks to improve its Condition. If you talk to the guy in the lower right corner, he'll offer to teach Swagger to one of your Pokemon.

When you're done here, exit and head all the way east, then slightly south to Stern's Shipyard. Talk to Dock here. He notices that you have the Devon Goods, but says that Capt. Stern has gone off somewhere. He tells you to find the captain and deliver the Goods to him. Exit the building and head up to the Oceanic Museum to the north. Pay 50 to get inside, and go talk to the Team Grunt who you thumped before. He'll give you the TM46 (Thief). Head down the back stairs.

In the basement, you'll find Capt. Stern. He'll take the Goods off your hands. However, right when he does, Team members bust in and try to take them. Battle time!

Carvanha: Level 14

You've defended the parts admirably... then the leader (Archie or Maxie, depending which game you're playing) shows up. He makes all kinds of bold claims, then runs off, leaving the Goods. Head back upstairs and leave.

Use the Center if you have to, then head over to the Name Rater to the west. This person will rate the given names of your Pok?mon and also allow you to change names of those that you do not like. From here, head north to the Battle Tent. Talk to the people in the waiting area and you'll be given TM 41(Torment). Enter the Battle Swap, and you'll be loaned three Level 30 Pok?mon to battle with. At the end of each round, you can swap one out if you don't like it for a different loaner. If youwin three consecutive matches, you'll be rewarded with a Full Heal.

Route 110

Route 110 is a long, long road full of trainer battles and rival Pok?mon. When you have a bike, it becomes much easier to travel, because you'll be able to use Cycling Road... but you don't currently have a bike. So, it's time to schlep!

As the path turns, there is a house. Go inside to meet the Trick Master, who is hiding under his table. Tricky! He has designed his house to be one big change trick... and the trick is on you. Each time you gain a new Badge, come back to the house, negotiate its tricks, and earn a new prize.

Different trainers and goodies await within each maze as well. Here's what's available:

Route 103
The area to the west of the house is the second half of Route 103. The other half lies on the Oldale Town side of things. When you learn Surf, you'll easily be able to traverse it. Go explore it and beat the Trainers there.

Rival Battle #3
A little way up the path, you'll meet up with your Rival for the third fight between you. Your Rival's Pok?mon are in the 18-20 range, so if you don't have adequate numbers, turn back and grow your team, or get some heavy-hitters out of the PC. Here's what your Rival brings to the table.

At the far end of Route 110, there is another entrance to Cycling Road. When you get your bike, a whole new route becomes available. We'll return for that later. For now, head north and pick the Nanab Berries, then continue north into Mauville City.

Mauville City
Mauville City is the site of the next Gym battle for you. But there's plenty here besides that. When you first come into town, take a look-see inside the building to the left of the Pok?mon Mart. If you happen to have Harbor Mail in your possession, the woman here will trade you the Coin Case she's carrying for it. The Coin Case is valuable, because it allows you to play games elsewhere in Mauville.

Inside the Pok?mon Mart, one door over, you'll be able to stock up on these supplies:

Pok? Ball: 200
Great Ball: 600
Super Potion: 700
Antidote: 100
Paralyz Heal: 200
Awakening: 250
X Speed: 350
X Attack: 500
X Defend: 550
Guard Spec: 700
Dire Hit: 650
X Accuracy: 950

One house to the east contains a man who will give you HM06 (Rock Smash). You'll need the Badge from this Gym before you can use it, but it's good to have. Once you do, leave and go slightly south, then search behind a fence to find X Speed.

The yellow building directly north of the HM house is Rydel's Cycles. Talk to the owner and he'll give you one of two bikes... either the Mach Bike or the Acro Bike. The Mach Bike goes faster, but has worse cornering, and the Acro Bike handles better, but is a little slower. Both bikes give you access to different places on the map. Mach allows you to climb sandy slopes, and Acros allows you to ride on precarious rails. The Mach Bike is best for your purposes now, so select it. You can always come back and swap bikes later.

Go to the south of the gym to find the Mauville Game Corner. Speak to everyone inside. One girl will give you a Doll and a man willgive you 20 Coins to begin playing. By playing the games, you can exchange the Coins you winfor prizes. You can purchase coins at the counter at the rate of 50 Coins for 1000 or 500 Coins for 10,000. The prizes you can win and their prices in Coins are:

Treecko Doll: 1000
Mudkip Doll: 1000
Torchic Doll: 1000
TM 32(Double Team) 1500
TM 29(Psychic): 3500
TM 35(Flamethrower): 4000
TM 24(Thunderbolt): 4000
TM 13(Ice Beam): 4000

To the west of the bike shop is a Pok?mon Center. Your Pok?mon are likely exhausted, so rest them up, and organize yourself for the upcoming Gym battle. If you have any strong Ground or Rock Types, grab them now. It's likely that you don't have enough experience to face the powerful Gym Leader coming up, so why not try out your new bike and gain a little experience at the same time? Head back to the area south of town and go into the building that leads up to the Cycling Road. Get on your Bike inside and head through the left door to go out to the road.

When you reach the end of the path, a guy on a bike will always give an assessment of your biking skills. Each time you go over the path, try to do a little bit better. Now, if you feel you built up enough experience, head back to Mauville City right away. If you still need more, spend some time on Route 110 building it up. Then, cruise back to Mauville City juiced up, and head for the Gym.

Mauville City
As you head toward the Mauville City Gym, you'll see a portly man. Talkto him and he will teach one of your Pokemon the move Rollout. run into a familiar face... Wally. He wants to battle Gym Leader Wattson himself. Teach him a little lesson by beating him mercilessly and sparing him the embarrassment.

Once you teach Wally just how pathetic he is, he will move aside, and you can access the Gym. His uncle invites you to visit them in Verdanturf. Soon enough, you'll be there.

Pok?mon Gym #3
Reward: Dynamo Badge
Gym Leader: Wattson

This Gym, as you might suspect, is brimming with Electric-Type Pok?mon. That means, bring as many Rock and Ground types that you can muster. If you've been working on raising a Torchic, bring that too... because by now it should be a Combusken who knows Double Kick, which can be quite devastating here. A Geodude with Magnitude will also be quite a hit. Leave your birds and fish at home, though.

Note: You'll want to return to Mauville (like everywhere else), once you get Surf. That will allow you to visit New Mauville, whose entrance is only accessible by water.

Mauville City/ Route 117

After you finish in Mauville City's Gym, heal your Pok?mon and head west, young trainer! You'll find yourself on Route 117. At the edge of Route 117 is the Pok?mon Day Care. Go talk to the Day Care Lady if you'd like her to raise your Pok?mon for you. She can raise two at a time, so go ahead and give her two of your lower-level Pok?mon. When you return, they will have grown in level. If you play your cards right, and leave a male and female Pok?mon there, you could be a proud parent when you come back. For more on breeding, check out the Trading/Breeding section of this guide. When you've given up a pair of Pok?mon, head back outside and continue west. Search the trails for trainers to fight.

After beating the trainers, search the area below the south flower bed to find a Great Ball. Use the Itemfinder on the opposite side of the clearingbelow the south flower bed to find a Repel. The area above the north flower bed has a Revive. Then head west into Verdanturf Town.

Verdanturf Town
Home to Wally's relatives and another Battle Tent, Verdanturf is a rather small place. The Battle Tent is straight west from where you enter Verdanturf. Here, you must win three consecutive battles once again. This time however, you'll have to rely on your Pok?mons' trust in you. You won't be able to command them, save for switching them in and out and telling them to attack. Your opponents will all be at Level 30, so be wary of entering this challenge right away. Win all three battles for a Nest Ball. Talk to the peoplein the lobby, and one will give you a TM 45(Attract).

Wally's relatives live in the middle house on the south edge of town. Go see your buddy and say what's up. In the house to the west of Wally's is a lady who will judge your Pok?mon to see how much it likes you. Make sure your best Pok?mon is in first position. Head up to the Pok?mon Center if you need some healing, then check out the selection of goods at the Pok?mon Mart:

Great Ball: 600
Nest Ball: 1000
Super Potion: 700

Paralyz Heal: 200
Awakening: 250
Burn Heal: 250
Ice Heal: 250

When you're done poking around in town, head through the tunnel entrance nearby. Make sure the Pok?mon you taught Rock Smash to is in your party, or teach that skill to a Pok?mon quickly.

Rusturf Tunnel
You've been on the other side of this tunnel before. But now, with the help of Rock Smash, you'll be able to join the two sides. First, you'll have to brawl.

Here, you'll meet a man who has dropped his glasses. Search the surrounding cliffs to find an HP Up. Use your Itemfinder to locate the Blackglasses. They actually don't belong to the man, but now you can keep them. Nifty. Head back to the tunnel.

Rusturf Tunnel
Move past the exit to Verdanturf town and head north. Not only will you find the Max Ether, but now you can reunite the lovers who have been separated. Use Rock Smash to clear the path. The appreciate man will give you the HM04 (Strength). You'll need the next Gym Badge to use it outside of combat, but what else is new? Head back down to Verdanturf Town.

Verdanturf Town
Back in Verdanturf, check back at Wally's place to see the woman from the tunnel. It was a relative of Wally's all along. Now that that's settled, return to Mauville City and go north, up Route 111.

Again, the south is blocked by the sandstorm, go keep going north. Soon, you'll run into this trainer:

Cooltrainer Wilton
Electrike: Level 17
Wailmer: Level 17
Makuhita: Level 17

Further up the path is a man who will give you TM43 (Secret Power). This gives you the ability to create a Secret Room anywhere there is an indent or large tree. You can furnish it with whatever you buy: Dolls, Plants, Posters, Mats. Teach it to a Pok?mon, and set up your pad today. Just don't forget where you put it!

Keep moving north. Soon, you will see a house to the east. Go up and over or Cut through the bush to get inside. Here, an old woman will help your Pok?mon rest, much like a Pok?mon Center. Rest them here. If you have your Mach Bike, you can get up the cliff north of her house. Get a good start and cruise up the sandy slope. Atop the cliff here is a trainer.

Black Belt Daisuke
Machop: Level 19

There is another way down to the desert from this cliff, but again, without the Go Goggles, you can't "go" anywhere. As you move west, another trainer brawl is triggered.

Inside the Pok?mon Center, you'll meet Lanette. She's the person who designed the Pok?mon Storage System. After you run into her later, Someone's PC will be renamed Lanette's PC.

To the west of the Pok?mon Center is another Battle Tent. This time, it is the Set KO Tourney. Win three matches in a row for a Hyper Potion. The house next to the Battle Tent belongs to the Move Tutor. This fellow will teach a move to your Pok?mon for the cheap price of a Heart Scale. You won't get any of those until you start rooting around at the bottom of the ocean later, but make sure you return to him to outfit your Pok?mon with all the right moves.

When you're done there, check out the building to the west of the Pok?mon Mart. It's Prof. Cozmo's Lab. Talk to the woman here, and she'll tell you he went to Route 114 with Team Aqua/Magma.

Route 114

Move to the outskirts of Fallarbor Town to the west. Here, you will see yet another greenish house. Head inside. You'll find that the Fossil Maniac lives here. The Maniac's little brother will give you TM28 (Dig), but (as ever), you won't be able to use it outside of battle until you win the next Badge. Go inside the hole in the wall and all the way to the back of the cave for advice on where to find fossils.

Meteor Falls

Once you arrive in Meteor Falls, go straight north to receive a Full Heal. Then return to the starting point and head west across the bridge. There you will stumble upon Team Magma in the midst of stealing a Meteorite. But as the Team is warning you, Team Aqua walks up and tells them to stop.

The rogue Team runs off to Mt. Chimney, leaving you. Team Aqua's leader will come talk to you, then take off, pursuing the cretins. Talk to the man who is left behind. It's Professor Cozmo! Talk to him, then head west and climb the stairs here to find a Moon Stone. If you head south, down the stairs or down the odd, slippery slopes, it will lead out to Route 115, which leads to Rustboro City. You don't need to go that way right now, so head all the way back to the cable car on Route 112.

Route 112
Back on the rocky ledge of Route 112, head to the cable car station and talk to the woman at the counter to head up to Mt. Chimney.

Mt. Chimney
Once you get off of the cable car, you'll see two Team members barring the southern path. Start your climb up the mountain. Talk to the foursome of Team members midway up to see what's going on. Then move to the western edge of the mountain and battle a pair of Team Grunts and their Admin.

Lavaridge Town
The Pok?mon Mart is the first thing you'll see in town, and it offers these goods:

Great Ball: 600
Super Potion: 700
Antidote: 100
Paralyz Heal: 200
Awakening: 250
Burn Heal: 250
Revive: 1500

You might want to pick up a Revive for the upcoming Gym Battle, just in case... and, of course, anything else you need. To heal your Pok?mon, head to the Pok?mon Center to the west. In front of the Center, talk to the old woman and she'll ask you if you like Hot Springs. If so, go inside the Center and exit through the back door. The springs don't do much of anything except relax you, but it's fun to chat with the soaking old ladies.

When you're done at the Pok?mon Center, talk to the old woman near the springs to get an Egg. If you don't have room in your party, make room and come back for it. The Egg will eventually hatch into a Wynaut.

After you get the Egg, head down to the shop to the east of the Gym. It's an Herb Shop. The things they sell are herbal cures similar to those that you can buy at the Pok?mon Mart. Don't buy too many of them, because if you keep feeding your Pok?mon bitter things, their love for you will wane. Here's what is offered:

Energypowder: 500
Energy Root: 800
Heal Powder: 450
Revival Herb: 2800

Be sure to talk to everyone here. You'll get some Charcoal for your trouble. Once you're done in the Herb Shop, step outside and move East one door. Talk to the boy and he'll teach one of your Pokemon the move Mimic. Next, go west to the Gym.

Pok?mon Gym Badge #4
Reward: Heat Badge
Gym Leader: Flannery

As you would expect in a town like Lavaridge, the Gym is full of Fire-Type Pok?mon. If you have a good Water-Type Pok?mon, bring it along and you may never have to use another. If you don't, bring a good Ground or Rock-Type to turn down the heat. The Gym itself is a series of water chutes which you must negotiate to get to the Leader. Trainers also pop out of the watery holes, so stay on your toes.

Torkoal: Level 29

Most of the battle with Flannery is pretty easy... but then she reaches for Torkoal. If you don't have a strong Water-Type to face her with, watch out. Torkoal's Overheat is a hardcore move that can drop nearly any Pok?mon you send out. Its Body Slam is no laughing matter, either. Be sure to have lots of Potions on hand and use them liberally. If in a pinch, use a Self-Destruct move to end this fight.

When you do, you'll earn the Heat Badge and all of the prestige that comes with it, including the fact that you'll be able to control all Pok?mon up to Level 50. You'll also have the ability to use Strength outside of combat, which will allow you to get a couple extra goodies on the Fiery Path, including a Fire Stone and TM06 (Toxic). Next time you walk the path, be sure to pick that stuff up. In addition to the Badge, you'll also get the powerful TM50 (Overheat). Teach it to someone you love.

Once you set foot outside of the Gym, your Rival will run up to you and give you the Go-Goggles. Now you'll be able to manage the sandstorm on Route 111.

Route 112/ Fiery Path
The next victim on the list of opponents is your own father, who lives in Petalburg City. The quickest way to get there is to head east, down the grassy ledges. Be sure to grab the Nugget on your way down. Then go up the rock steps and into the cave, following the Fiery Path through to the second half of 112. Bend north and go onto Route 111.

Use the Go-Goggles you just got to explore the vast desert. Battle all of the trainers.

All the way at the southern tip of the desert is TM37 (Sandstorm). Grab it.

Head in to the Mirage Tower. On the second floor, you'll have to use your Mach Bike. Get going fast enough, and the crumbling floors will break behind you. If you are moving too slow, you'll fall back down to the first floor. On the third floor, you'll have to use Rock Smash to break your way through to the next ladder. On the last floor, smash the rock and climb the stairs. You'll see two fossils, a Claw and a Root. Grab one of them (the other will sink with the tower) and keep it until you can return to Slateport. Take it to the Devon Corp and the researcher will determine it is a Pok?mon. The Root Fossil turns into a Lileep, while the Claw Fossil is actually an Anorith.

On your way out, note the rock formation just to the north of the Sandstorm TM. Once you figure out the puzzle in the Sealed Chamber, you can return here for a crack at the rare Pok?mon Regirock. You're done in the desert. Head back out to Route 111 and go north.

Route 111/ Route 113/ Fallarbor Town/ Meteor Falls
Follow Route 111 up to Route 113, and head west, through Fallarbor Town, to Route 114 and through Meteor Falls, and down to Route 115.

Route 115

The lower half of Route 115, which you're about to explore, is a straightforward shot to Rustboro City. However, once you get Surf, head down to the beach and surf along the coast to get to the top half. Up there, you'll be able to get TM01 (Focus Punch), some Kelpsy Berries and some Iron (you'll need your Mach Bike for this).

For now, though, head down the eastern edge of the path. Use Rock Smash on the boulder, then scoot down the path to grab a Great Ball and some Bluk Berries. After that, return to the path and start wrecking some trainers.

Rustboro City
Remember that Fossil you recently picked up in the desert? Take it to the Devon Corporation building's second floor. Talk to the researcher in the bottom right corner and he'll change your Fossil into a Pok?mon. It'll take a while to finish, though, so stop by at the Pok?mon Center and heal, then go back. When you get the Pok?mon, leave the city to the south, heading toward Route 104.

Route 104/ Petalburg Woods
Run through Route 104 and Petalburg Woods to get back to Petalburg City.

Petalburg City
You've been here before, but this time, you mean business. You'll have to take on your own father in the Gym here. Organize your troops, heal and buy Items in preparation for the fight.

Gym Badge #5
Prize: Balance Badge
Gym Leader: Norman

This Gym is full of Normal-Type Pok?mon, so if you have any beefy Fighting-Types, bring them to battle. If you chose Torchic and leveled it up to Combusken status, you'll be set using its double kick. Any strong Pok?mon will do, though.

The Gym is set up in a series of seven rooms, leading up to Norman. Each room features a different battle skill. The Cooltrainers will use Items and status-altering techniques to win. However, you don't have to battle them all to get to him. The easiest route is to stick to the left room and avoid the KO Room. All trainers are listed here, though:

Speed Room: Cooltrainer Randall

Slaking: Level 31

Beating Norman requires quick, devastating strikes, as the Facade moves his Slaking knows are quite powerful. Use X Attacks in concert with strong Fighting-Type moves to claim victory. When you do, you'll get the Balance Badge, and along with it, the ability to use Surf outside of battle. A world of new possibilities is now open to you! Another thing you'll get is TM42 (Facade). It doubles the power of moves if a Pok?mon is poisoned, paralyzed or burned.

Leave the Gym and head over to Wally's parents' house. They'll give you the HM03 (Surf) for helping out their dear little Wally. How precious.

Now that you know Surf...
It's time to explore some areas you previously haven't had access to. We will explain how to travel to the ones you can visit right now. Start by going down Route 104 and exploring the path that Briney took you on.

Route 104
Exit Rustboro City to the west and go down to the beach. Teach a Pok?mon the Surf move and get going to the south. You're on Route 105!

Once you pass Luis, Surf south, sticking to the western rocks. Search the islands here to find an Iron. Then move south to Route 106.

Dewford Town

This will only come in handy when you have the Dive skill, when you can return and collect Items from a group of six rooms. Get TM18 (Rain Dance), the Water Stone and a Scanner here. Remember to come back!

The leftmost cabin in this row contains an Escape Rope. Grab it, then go back to the hall. Go straight across the hall and search the two cabins here. In the right one, you'll locate a Dive Ball. The left one contains a clueless kid. Exit back to the hall and go up the left staircase. When you arrive back upstairs, a trainer rushes up.

Route 110/ Cycling Road/ Mauville City
Go north to Route 110, and use your bike to get on the Cycling Road to make the trip to Mauville City a little faster. Once you get to Mauville City, head east on Route 118.

Fisherman Barny
Tentacool: Level 25
Carvanha: Level 25

Once he falls, move slightly north and you'll be greeted by Steven. He tells you to raise Pok?mon of many different types. When he leaves, cut the nearby tree to get to the Sitrus Berries to the north. Then move east and take on the trainers you find there.

Route 119

Route 119 is a wide, grassy area that can only be traveled by foot. If your Pok?mon are weak, you may want to think about running back to Mauville City and filling up on supplies and healing your Pok?mon before moving on. As you head north, you'll find a trainer to the east, two to the west, and two in the middle.

If you have the Acro Bike, use it on the rails to the west to get across the water and collect a Zinc. Once you've cleared the area, return to the main path and go up the steps to the rocky plateau. Before you cross the bridge here, you'll have to face a trainer.

When you beat them, move north toward the bridge. A couple of Team Grunts are blocking the bridge, so head inside the Weather Institute to clear things up.

The Weather Institute
The Weather Institute will offer you the opportunity to quickly rest. Once you enter the door, go to the left to find a bed, and take a snooze, revitalizing your party. There's also a PC in the corner near the bed, and it's a good idea to put one of your Pok?mon away (if traveling with a full team), because the gift of a Pok?mon is upcoming. Then head over to the other side of the room to tangle with a pair of Team Grunts.

Once the battle is over, the professor you saved gives you the Pok?mon Castform (Level 25). If you don't have room for it, use the downstairs PC and return to get the creature. Castform changes shape according to weather conditions, which is key in the grassy regions near the Institute. Once you're done, rest again, then leave the Institute building and head across the bridge which Aqua/Magma members were blocking. Once you get across the bridge, it's time for a rival battle.

Rival Battle #4
As always, the rival battle will depend on which Pok?mon you chose to begin the adventure. Here is a list of Pok?mon your rival will use, based on what you picked:

Treecko:
Pelipper: Level 29
Lombre: Level 29
Combusken: Level 31

Torchic:
Lombre: Level 29
Slugma: Level 29
Marshtomp: Level 31

Mudkip:
Slugma: Level 29
Grovyle: Level 31
Lombre/Pelipper: Level 29

The fight should be an easy one, as your Pok?mon should be leveled up much higher than your rival's at this point. Just keep types in mind, and don't be afraid to use those items. Your reward for winning (aside from moving on), is HM 02 (Fly). To call this move handy is an understatement. Once you get the Feather Badge in Fortree City, you'll be able to use the move out of battle to cruise around the map, provided you've already visited the town you want to travel to.

Route 119
Once you finish the rival battle, go down to the water to fish, or up the path towards Fortree City. More Ninja trainers await.

Ninja Boy Yasu
Ninjask: Level 26

Guitarist Fabian
Manectric: Level 26

Ninja Boy Hideo
Koffing: Level 25
Koffing: Level 25

Once you've beaten the Ninja chumps, explore the little grove of Pomeg Berries, and pick them. Then head to the right, into Fortree City.

Fortree City
This is the location of the sixth badge, the Feather Badge. Before you go all willy-nilly into the Gym, though, take some time to explore the city. It's full of treehouses, and contains the standard buildings.

The Pok?mon Mart here contains the following items:
Great Ball: 600
Ultra Ball: 1200
Super Potion: 700
Hyper Potion: 1200
Antidote: 100
Paralyz Heal: 200
Awakening: 250
Revive: 1500
Super Repel: 500
Wood Mail: 50

If you go up the ladder next to the Pok?mon Center, you'll run into a little girl inside the treehouse who wants a Volbeat. If you've gotten one, you can give it to her. If not, try to catch one later, and then return (remember to catch more than one, so you have one for yourself!).

In the next building to the right, an old woman will check your Pok?mon for Hidden Power. She'll ask you to guess which hand she holds a coin in. If you choose correctly all three times (right, right, left), she'll give you TM 10 (Hidden Power). The old woman has a TV in her room, too, so if you haven't caught it already, you'll be able to see the piece Gabby and Ty did about you. In front of the third house is the Gym. When you try to go down the ladder, the path will be blocked. Move back up for now.

One more house over, you'll run into a boy who sends his Wingull away. He's writing a letter to someone in Mossdeep City. Once you meet the girl whom he's writing to, return to him and he'll give you a Mental Herb.

Shop
Continuing straight down, you'll discover a Shop on top of a tree. Where else? Anything you buy here will be sent conveniently back to your PC. The right side sells chairs:

Small Chair: 2000
Pok?mon Chair: 2000
Heavy Chair: 2000
Ragged Chair: 2000
Comfort Chair: 2000
Brick Chair: 2000
Camp Chair: 2000
Hard Chair: 2000

The left side sells desks:

Small Desk: 3000
Pok?mon Desk: 3000
Heavy Desk: 6000
Ragged Desk: 6000
Comfort Desk: 6000
Brick Desk: 9000
Camp Desk: 9000
Hard Desk: 9000

Buy whatever you need, then exit the shop, and make your way to the right, towards Route 120.

Route 120
Wild Pok?mon: Marill, Barboach, Goldeen, Oddish, Surskit, Kecleon, Magikarp

In order to get down to the Pok?mon Gym, you'll need to head down Route 120. Here, you'll meet the following trainers:

Parasol Lady Clarissa
Roselia: Level 28
Wailmer: Level 28

Interviewer Gabby and Ty
Magneton: Level 30
Loudred: Level 30

Gabby and Ty send out their pair simultaneously, so make sure your top two are who you want to battle with. After the fight, there will be another interview, if you say "Yes." Why not? Pick a word to describe the battle, then go to the north and cut the series of bushes. Use the item finder to pick upa Rare Candy. Then continue down the path.

Bird Keeper Robert
Swablu: Level 29

Once you defeat the Birdman, move across the bridge to the left to find Steven. He'll give you the Devon Scope to help you find an otherwise invisible Kecleon. You'll have to battle the startled beast. If you don't have one, catch this one! Once you have the Devon Scope, head back toward Fortree City. In the tall grass to the south, just outside of town, you'll find a stairway that leads down to a Pok?ball. But you can't get down the stairs! Use the Devon Scope to see the Kecleon hiding there, then beat it and grab the ball. It contains a Nest Ball.

Scorched Slab
Once you have it, Surf under the bridge and across this pond to the cave, and enter. It's Scorched Slab. Inside, you'll find TM11 (Sunny Day). Store it away.

Route 119
Go back to where you last fought the ninjas hidden in the trees. A small path to the westis just south of one of them. Use the Devon Scope to battle another Kecleon. If you haven't caught one yet, this is your chance!

Fortree City
Head back to town and heal your Pok?mon, then head back to the Gym. The Kecleon that you detect at the base of the stairs (using the Devon Scope) will bolt. Head into the gym.

As you could have guessed with the Feather Badge at stake, this gym is all about Flying Pok?mon. Her cronies all employ at least one bird-type Pok?mon. Therefore, bring an Electric, Rock or Ice Pok?mon to combat her and her protectors. If you have a level 30+ Pok?mon with Aurora Beam (like Sealeo), that will help you carve your way easily through the gym. Here is what each trainer is packin':

Birdkeeper Humberto
Skarmory: Level 30

Birdkeeper Jared
Doduo: Level 27
Skarmory: Level 27
Tropius: Level 27

Picnicker Ashley
Swablu: Level 27

Camper Flint
Swellow Level 29
Xatu: Level 29

Birdkeeper Edwardo
Doduo: Level 29
Pelipper: Level 29

Birdkeeper Darius
Tropius: Level 30

Gym Leader Winona
Swablu: Level 29
Tropius: Level 29
Pelipper: Level 30
Skarmory: Level 31
Altaria: Level 33

The real brat of this pack is Skarmory, whose Steel Wing attack can be brutal. Winona will also not hesitate to keep feeding her Pok?mon Hyper Potions to prolong the battle. Once you beat Winona, you'll get the Feather Badge, which allows you to command Pok?mon up to Level 70, even if received through trade. You'll also be able to Fly the friendly skies and get around the map much faster. Winona will also present you with the TM40 (Aerial Ace). Teach it to a Flying Pok?mon for extra aerial power.

Now that you can Fly...
Head back to Littleroot Town and visit your mother! She'd love to see you... and she'll give you the Amulet Coin, which doubles the money in battle if the holder takes part. Give it to your beefiest Pok?mon, and watch the money roll in.

Route 120
After you put down Winona, head back across the bridge where you recently saw Steven, and continue on. As you move down, you'll encounter more trainers.

Birdkeeper Colin
Wingull: Level 28
Natu: Level 28

Battle Girl Callie
Meditite: Level 28
Makuhita: Level 28

Parasol Lady Angelica
Castform: Level 30

Ninja Boy Riley
Nincada: Level 28
Koffing: Level 28

Cooltrainer Leonel
Manectric: Level 30

Cooltrainer Jennifer
Sableye: Level 30

Once you have defeated all the trainers here, pick up the Revive, then move all the way to the right and cut down the tree here to gain access to an Aspear Berry Grove. Pick them, and plant more if you so desire, then go back to the path and head south, through the high grass. Here, you'll run across another few trainers.

Pok?mon Ranger Lorenzo
Seedot: Level 28
Lombre: Level 28
Nuzleaf: Level 28

Pok?mon Ranger Jenna
Lotad: Level 28
Lombre: Level 28
Nuzleaf: Level 28

Once the battle concludes, search the grass to the left to find a Nugget. This can be sold for some nice dough the next time you're in town. In the next area, leap off of the ledge to the right and cross the bridge right to left. Move down to find the next trainer.

Bug Maniac Brandon
Surskit: Level 27
Surskit: Level 27
Surskit: Level 27

Bug Maniac Jeffrey is a pretty easy mark. When he asks you to fight again (check your Trainers' Eyes), take him up on it. After you beat him five times, he'll yield the Silver Powder. Make sure you collect the Hyper Potion in the grass behind him as well.

When you're done with him, head down to talk to the Rare Berry Girl. She'll give you a random, rare berry if you answer her question "Yes." Be sure to grab some more berries from the grove to the left. There are even more Berries to be had by climbing the nearby stairs. Think of all the Pok?blocks you can make! Once you've grabbed the berries, Surf across the pond to the south and grab the Full Heal on the opposite shore. Then sail back across and head north. Another ninja will be waiting.

Ninja Boy Keigo
Koffing: Level 28
Ninjask: Level 28

Head through the tall grass and up the steps for another battle.

Ruin Maniac Chip
Baltoy: Level 27
Sandshrew: Level 27
Sandslash: Level 27

As you continue up, you'll notice a large stone formation at the center of this field. It will eventually reveal itself to be the Ancient Tomb. But not now. We'll return when it's relevant. For now, head down Route 121.

Route 121
Wild Pok?mon: Zigzagoon, Gloom, Wingull, Wailmer, Tentacool, Shuppet, Pelipper, Oddish, Magikarp, Kecleon, Duskull

This alleyway leads many places, but in order to traverse it, you'll have to battle a slew of trainers.

Bug Maniac Cale
Dustox: Level 29
Beautifly: Level 29

Hex Maniac Tammy
SHuppet: Level 29
Duskull: Level 29

Beauty Jessica
Kecleon: Level 29
Seviper: Level 29

After defeating Beauty Jessica, search the grove of trees for Berries. Aspear, Persim, Rawst and Chesto Berries are on tap in this little orchard. As you move further down the path, you'll see the conniving Team Aqua/Magma moving toward Mt. Pyre. Leave them for right now. You've got more important things to do, i.e. catching scads of Pok?mon. You'll note that cutting a simple tree will lead you to a building. Go inside and talk to the man at the desk to start your adventure in the Safari Zone.

Safari Zone
The idea behind the Safari Zone is to catch as many Pok?mon as possible. You'll get 30 Safari Balls to play with, but you have to use them all before you walk 500 steps, because then, the fun is over. The price is 500 as well. Cheap! The beautiful part of it is, any time you have 500 bucks, you can play... so you should be able to catch all of the rare Pikachus and Psyducks you want to.

A couple of notes are in order. The Safari Zone is unlike other Pok?mon-catching situations. First off, you don't have to battle any of the creatures that you meet. However, that almost makes catching them even harder. Instead of weakening them by fighting, you have two options. Either you can creep closer and attempt to use the Pok?ball then, or you can lure/distract them with Pok?blocks. Make sure you have plenty of Pok?blocks before you set foot in the Zone. If you don't have any handy, fly back to Slateport City and mix some up quick, then return.

Once you actually go out on the Safari field, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Getting closer to a Pok?mon increases your shot of capturing it. Don't move in too close, though, or you could frighten it away.
  • Talk to everyone you meet. They'll all be able to give you hints about catching Pok?mon here. Make sure to stop by the Rest House at the center of the map at least once.
  • Use the Pok?block Feeders! Pok?mon around the feeders are more likely to be caught because they're distracted by checking out the goodies.
  • Specific Pok?blocks attract animals with natures similar to the Pok?block's. An animal that is attracted in this way is much easier to catch.
  • One way to save steps is to stand on a square in the tall grass and simply flick the D-Pad in a different direction. Your character won't take a step, but you do have a chance of scaring up a new Pok?mon.
  • Come back to the Safari Zone with each different bike--Mach and Acro. The Mach Bike will be able to quickly reach higher areas on the left of the map, and the Acro Bike will get to the higher regions on the right. In fact, you'll need to ride these bikes to get some of the goodies stashed at the north end of the map.
  • Make sure you explore watery areas. Surf on large areas to find even more rare Pok?mon.
  • Before you leave the Safari Zone, there are some items you should definitely grab. Use the Mach Bike to go up the cliff to the west, then work your way around to the northern pond. Cross it to find TM22 (Solarbeam). Conversely, ride the Acro Bike over the rails on the east half of the map, then head north to find a Calcium up against the rocks in some tall grass. In the lower right corner near the waterfall, you can pick up a Big Pearl. In the lower left corner, you'll find a Max Revive across the pond there. Since you only get 500 steps, you can't grab all of these things on the same trip. But remember to come back and snag them later!

    Route 121
Once you're done in the Safari Zone, go explore Lilycove City quickly. It will be handy to have this location available to fly to later, so you may as well see it now. Go down the steps south of the Safari Zone to get to Lilycove City. Before you get there, you'll have to weave through a partially fenced-in path, and take on several trainers.

    Pikachu: Level 30

Near Kate and Joy is a Zinc, next to the breeders is a Revive, and near Gentleman Walter is a Carbos. There are Nanab Berries to be found on the south part of the path, near the water. Cut through to the north and use the Itemfinder to pick up a Nugget. Once you have them, head to the right, into Lilycove City.

    Lilycove City
Lilycove City is your one-stop shopping headquarters. Make sure you talk to everyone in town en route to the huge department store, which is directly north of the Pok?mon Center. Before you head up there, explore the rest of town. To the right of the PC is a house full of Pok?fans. If you become famous by becoming the Champion, return here to see who has become a fan of you!

Directly south of this building is the Cove Lily Motel. If you fill up your Pok?dex, return here and show the owner of the motel. For now, though, follow the long path to the south that edges the water. At the end of this path is a Max Repel. Once you get it, head back to the main path and turn left. The first building you'll see is the Contest Hall. Talk to the receptionist, and you will be given a Pokeblock Case. There is a Berry Blender here as well. For more information about contests, visit the Contests section of this guide.

In the next cottage to the left is the Pok?block Master. She'll give you hints about making great Pok?blocks. The most important thing she says is that a good Pok?block has a low feel rating and a high level. Test out what you learned at the Contest Hall next door, or just head south to the Lilycove City Harbour. The sign out front tells you that the Ferry SS Tidal is under construction. It'll be awhile until it's operational. Check back when you become champion. Now it's time to head up to the Department Store. Climb the stairs to the right of the Pok? Center to get up there. Before going in, head all the way to the right and get a random Berry from the salty dog on the cliff.

Before you can get inside the Department Store, you'll have to battle your Rival again. Have at it, young buck!

    Rival Battle #5
This is the final Rival Battle you'll face in the game, and of course it's the toughest. Again, the Pok?mon your Rival has depends what you picked to begin the game. A decent array of Pok?mon (Water, Flying, Ground, etc.) is helpful, but if you have a strong Electric Pok?mon, you're set. Here's how it breaks down:

    Treecko
    Tropius: Level 31
    Pelipper: Level 32
    Ludicolo: Level 32
    Combusken: Level 34

    Torchic

    Lilycove Department Store
Once you've battled, you can get in. This is the largest store in the game, and contains just about anything you want. Here's what's on each floor:

    Floor One: Lottery Center
Go up to the right counter to enter the free Pok?mon Lotto. If one of your Pok?mon's IDs matches the number they draw, you'll win a prize. You can win:

    • Master Ball

    • Exp. Share
    • PP Up

The house to the right of the Dept. Store is home to the Move Deleter, who can help any Pok?mon you own unlearn a move. Be careful what you choose to delete, though! To the left of the Department Store, you'll find a Museum. If you talk to the Curator at the rear, he'll take you to a Select Exhibit Hall. It's where he eventually wishes to put modern works of Pok?mon art. Once you win the Master Rank Contest in town, painters will want to paint your Pok?mon. Bring the paintings they do back to this spot... there's room for five!

We're done in Lilycove City for the time being, but will be back shortly. Head back to the Safari Zone entrance.

    Route 122

After you exit Lilycove City, cut down the tree to the left of the Safari Zone and move down the nearby steps. Go down to the pier near the water. Go to the bottom edge of the dock and plop into the water, Surfing across to the peak known as Mt. Pyre (this waterway is Route 122). Surf to the south side of the cave and enter.

    Mt. Pyre

Mt. Pyre is a place where people gather to remember lost Pok?mon. Since this is a cave, anywhere you step can result in a battle. Talk to everyone here to get the scoop. In the first room, go to the upper right corner and talk to the woman there to get the Cleanse Tag. Give it to your #1 Pok?mon to help ward off other wild Pok?mon. Once you get it, go up the staircase to the second floor. The second floor is party to some trainer battles.

    Hex Maniac Tasha
    Shuppet: Level 32

When Tasha falls, note the Pok?ball behind the low rock wall. You'll have to fall from above to retrieve it. But head up to the fifth floor for now, where a new trainer awaits.

    Black Belt Atsushi
    Hariyama: Level 32

When the battle concludes, climb to the highest floor... the sixth.

    Hex Maniac Valerie
    Sableye: Level 32

    Psychic Cedric
    Wobuffet: Level 32

Once you smoke Valerie, grab the TM30 (Shadow Ball) on the top floor, then drop through the hole to drop to the fifth. On this floor, the Pok?ball contains Lax Incense. On this floor, drop through the lower of two holes. This will allow you to secure the Sea Incense on the next floor down. Three more falls will put you on ground level. Once there, follow the path to the left, exiting the cave monument.

Now the climb up the actual mountain itself begins. Climb the mountain until you reach a grassy ledge with stairs leading down to a rocky ledge. Here you'll find TM48 (Skill Swap). Grab it and continue your ascent. Right when it starts to become misty, grab a Pok?ball containing Max Potion. On the next level, search the leftmost path to find a hidden Ultra Ball. Then keep climbing. Soon, you'll run into Team Aqua.

    Team Grunt
    Carvanha: Level 32

At the summit, you'll meet Archie, who has stolen the Blue Orb from atop the mountain. He leaves suddenly and heads to Slateport. The old couple at the top of the mountain give you the Red Orb (Magma Emblem) for safekeeping. Before you fly off to Slateport, you'll want to check out a couple of new locations. Directly across from the cave exit, Surf in the water and head down to the land there. It's Route 123!

    Route 123

As you go down the path, you'll meet a girl who has a thing for Grass-Type Pok?mon. If you have one in your party, she'll give you TM19 (Giga Drain). If you don't have one in your party, make sure you return when you do. Grab the Berries from the trees here as well: Pecha, Sitrus, and Rawst. To avoid the next patch of grass (if your Pok?mon are weak), cut the tree nearby and go through the path to the next area. Once there, you can cut another tree to the north, and follow the path to some more Leppa Berries. Then, hop off the ledge to the left to collect an Elixir. Trainers along this path include:

Once you take down Aroma Lady Violet, pillage the nearby Berry Orchard for all kinds of varieties of Berries, including Qualot, Grepa, and Pomeg. Once you've looted his fields, go inside and talk to the Berry Master and his wife. The old man will randomly give you two Berries as well. Come back every day to get a new two. Talk to the Berry Master's wife. She will ask you if you've heard any good sayings lately. Concoct a phrase and she will give you a Berry. If you've done anything remarkable that's added words to your vocabulary, like finding a rare Pok?mon, or becoming the Champion, use phrases with rare words in them to score ultra-rare Berries. Once you're done, go back to the Jagged Pass. You'll needthe Acro Bike to go up the Jagged Pass, so if you don't have it, stop by Mauville City, then Fly to Lavaridge City and go north to the Jagged Pass.

    Jagged Pass
Go north out of Lavaridge City to get back to the Jagged Pass. Climb the mountain until a new cave opens up. Head inside to find the Team Magma Hideout. You can re-battle these trainers along the way.

Maxie has some high level Pokemon. If you aren't ready for the battle, level up your team a bit and come back.A high level Water Pokemon will do well against these opponents. Bring several strong Pokemon to the battle so thatif one becomes confused, you can switch it out without missing a beat. After beating Maxie, follow the path back outsideand Fly to Lilycove City.

    Lilycove City
Once in town, head back to the random Berry guy to the east of the Dept. Store. Leap down the ledges here to talk to a pair of clueless Grunts who reveal the location of their secret hideout. Then go to the nearby house and get the TM44 (Rest) from the sleepy fellow indoors. After this, head down to the beach and use Surf to get up to the northern cave that's serving as a Hideout. The Grunts there tell you their boss went off to steal a sub. It's time to get over to Slateport, so use Fly and get there!

    Slateport City
Since you haven't been to Slateport City for awhile, there are a couple of new things to do (aside from tracking down Team Magma/Aqua, which is why you're really here).

You can get a discount on the Secret Store at the north end of the open air market, as long as you have TM43 (Secret Power). You can also get massive deals on stuff from the Energy Guru once you become Champ, so make sure to return here for some good bargains.

To follow the Team you're after, go talk to Capt. Stern. He's in the midst of being interviewed, but just barge right in and talk. While you're chatting with him, a Magma/Aqua member will show up and deliver a message that the submarine is about to be stolen. Follow the sound to the harbor, where you'll find Archie/Maxie. When you show up, they'll leave, scooting back to their Hideout. You know what to do... Fly back to Lilycove and return to their Hideout.

In the ensuing room, move right to the next warp spot. The next room is a grid of warp spots. Go to the far right one in the first row, the middle one in the second row, the leftone in the third row and the far leftone in the bottom row. This will take you to a room that's seemingly full of Balls. Watch out for slumbering Electrodes who are laying in wait for you! There is a Nugget here as well as a Master Ball. Once you grab them, warp back.

Go through the room full of warp holes back to the last one you battled trainers in. Here, go all the way to the right and through the other warp hole, then through the stairs. Battle the trainers in this room.

As the fight concludes, the submarine pulls away. Now you'll have to search the seas beyond Lilycove to follow. To get out of the fortress, head to the warp spot to the southeast. Once outside, turn to the east to find Route 124.

    Route 124
Wild Pok?mon: Tentacool, Wailmer, Wingull, Relicanth, Pelipper, Magikarp

The surface of Route 124 is only half of the story. Once you earn the Dive HM, you'll get to return and fully explore the area beneath the waves. Until you get Dive, you can't get many of the goodies here. You'll encounter a few swimming trainers, though.

As you move farther east, you'll hit an island. There, you'll meet the Diving Treasure Hunter. He wants to find the pieces of ancient tools, called Shards. Again, this is a quest for you once you've scored Dive. Head back here after Mossdeep Gym for some sweet rewards. He'll trade you a Water, Leaf, Fire, or Thunder Stone depending upon which color shard you bring him.For now, though, just keep moving east until you hit the shore. Go south along the shore until you see stairs to take you up to Mossdeep City.

    Mossdeep City
Mossdeep City is where you'll (finally) find the Gym that will give you your seventh Badge. Talk to the guy as you approach the beach and he will teach you Dynamic Punch. After that, let's just take a look around town. As you go up the stairs, head north and go into the building to the left of the Pok?mon Center. Here, a little boy will tell you he found the Secret Base you made. What a talent.

The house directly behind this one is Steven's. He'll give you the Dive HM08 after you beat Team Magma in the Space Center. If you head one house to the right, the guy there will tell you one of your Pok?mon's favorite Pok?block color. Useful info, indeed. Near these two houses is a little boy who will give you King's Rock. Give it to a Pok?mon who you want to evolve. This held item may also cause Pok?opponents to flinch. The Gym is to the east, but wait to go there for now. Instead, head south to the Pok?mon Mart.

    Pok? Mart
The following items are for sale at Mossdeep's market:

    Ultra Ball: 1200
    Net Ball: 1000
    Dive Ball: 1000
    Hyper Potion: 1200
    Full Heal: 600
    Revive: 1500
    Max Repel: 700
    X Attack: 500
    X Defend: 550

South of the Mart is another house, and a path leading to the east. Go inside the house if you have a GBA Wireless Adapter and you can link up with a friend to play some minigames. If not, follow the path until you see stairs to the south. Follow them down to grab a Net Ball, then return to the main path and keep heading east. The next set of stairs leads up to a house. Inside, you'll find the little girl who is corresponding with the fellow from Fortree who you encountered earlier. Remember, if you return to that chap he'll give you Mental Herb, so do it the next time you're in his town.

Exit the girl's house and move around to the west, then the north. There, you'll find another cottage. Talk to the boy inside to get the Super Rod for fishing. You can catch Pok?mon that live all the way down to the ocean floor with it. When you're done here, go back toward the girl's house and climb the stairs near her house. Go inside the Space Center and talk to the old man to get the Sun Stone, which will allow you to evolve certain Fire-type Pok?mon. Once you finish at the Space Center, go back to the Gym. Time for a fight!

    Pok?mon Gym #7
    Prize: Mind Badge
    Gym Leaders: Tate and Liza
There are tons of Psychic-Type Pok?mon awaiting you in this labyrinthine Gym. Leave your Fighting and Poison Types behind. You'll want to bring a balanced crew with you, and be sure to have a duo of absolute shockers for the final battle, as it is a simultaneous affair. Either that, or just have one super-leveled up champion Pok?mon who can take anything. Here's how the fights break down:

If you need healing, do it before the fight commences. Have plenty of Potions handy in case this affair drags out. Tate and Liza will use plenty of Hyper Potions, so you'll have to deal massive damage to win the fight. If you have a Water-Type Pok?mon, use it. Both of the Level 42 creatures are vulnerable to it. If you have an attack that hits both at once, like Muddy Water or Surf, use that to make the fight a short one. When you triumph, you'll gain the Mind Badge, and earn the ability to use Dive outside of combat. In addition, they'll throw in TM04 (Calm Mind).

    After getting Badge #7

After you defeat Tate and Liza, stop by the Pokemon Center to rest up your team. Then, head over to the Space Center. You'll see Team Magma running there as your approach. Battle the grunts on the first floor.

    Now that you can Dive...
Return to Route 124, the seaway that brought you here. Now, whenever you see a dark patch of water while using Surf, you can Dive and explore the seafloor. By resurfacing in the right place, you can access places you've never been before. To resurface, just trigger Dive again.

In order to find the treasures that the hunter is seeking, search for the dark spots. Dive in each one you see. Even if there seems to be nothing once you dive, check the bottom of the sea floor. If it looks like there is a slight depression in the ground, there is some buried treasure there. Press A to dig it up. You can get Heart Scales, Big Pearls and more this way. If you dive and there is a tunnel, follow it and surface at the far end. This will allow you to get behind the craggy rocks that bar passage to the north and south. The Yellow Shard is in the northeast, the Red Shard is in the northwest and the Blue Shard is in the southwest.

When you have them all, take them back to the Treasure Hunter. He'll trade the Red Shard for a Firestone, the Blue Shard for a Waterstone, and the Yellow Shard for a Thunderstone. When you finish with him, Surf again, following the coast around until you're north of Mossdeep City. You'll soon be on Route 125.

    Route 125
Wild Pok?mon: Tentacool, Wailmer, Wingull, Relicanth, Pelipper, Magikarp

The whole purpose for Route 125 is to allow you to get up to Shoal Cave. However, there are some good trainer fights here as well. Make sure to explore the seas to the northeast to find everyone.

    Shoal Cave

The entrance to the cave is right behind Sr. and Jr. Kim and Iris. When you first enter the cave, you'll meet an old man who wants you to bring him Shoal Salts and Shoal Shells. Bring him four of each, and he'll make you a Shell Bell. Depending on what time of the day it is, the cave may be flooded or bone dry, because of the tide. Therefore, different areas and items will be available during the wet and dry times.

When it's dry, you will not be able to reach high ledges. However, you will be able to go down ladders in the floor that let you dig deep into the bowels of the cavern. Search the nether regions to find Ice Heal, and the Shoal Salt you'll need for the old man (the Shoal Shells can be gotten when the tide is high). You'll also run into a man who gives you Focus Band, which helps prevent fainting. To the east of the Focus Band chap, you'll encounter a boulder. Use Strength to move it aside, and continue down the ladder.

The next cave is completely covered in ice. The problem is, the second you set foot on the ice, you go shooting across. Therefore, you have to use rocks and other debris to stop yourself in order to negotiate your way across each area. If you're having problems, check out these movies to see how to get through the cave.

By successfully navigating the room, you'll gain the Nevermeltice and TM07 (Hail), both of which are worth the trip.

When the cave is wet, you'll be able to move around and collect all of the Shoal Shells you need for the old man. Bring him all the ingredients and he'll whip up a Shell Bell. During high tide, you'll also be able to score a Rare Candy and Big Pearl. Treasure from the deep! When you're done with Shoal Cave, head to the south of Mossdeep City and then head south to Route 127.

    Route 127

Route 127 is a super-wide seaway with lots of trainers bobbing about. When you first enter it, stick to the west side of the passage and search the reef area (the light blue region) to find a Zinc. Directly south from here are two trainers guarding a Rare Candy.

    Seafloor Cavern

Seafloor Cavern is a subterranean cave deep beneath the waves. Go into the cave entrance to get things started. When the fight concludes, the Orb begins to shine, and the ancient statue disappears. Outside, the weather is going crazy. Looks like the Team did it this time! Luckily, they are kind enough to transport you back outside. When they do, Steven swoops in and asks what's going on. Steven tells you that the source of the problem is above Sootopolis. Time to head over there. Remember where Route 126 is (west of 127)? Head over there now.

Note: You may want to Fly back to Mossdeep City and heal your Pok?mon or stock up on Potions and the like before heading over there.

    Route 126

Route 126 is a large, circular area with a dormant volcano at its center. In the interest of getting to the action quickly, use a Max Repel when traveling so you won't be slowed by random Pok?mon encounters. The trainers found in this area are:

    Sootopolis City
The Gym sits on an island in the center of a body of water as you surface. But you can't get in. You can get to the Mart if you like.

    Shadow Mail: 50

Instead of going to the gym, head to the left and look for Steven. He'll bring you to the Cave of Origin.

    Cave of Origin

Inside the cave, you may want to use Repels to get the job done faster. In the first area, make your way to the down ladder. Repeat this in the next room The cave below is quite misty. In the misty area, it's the same idea. On the south end of the room, you'll meet Wallace who will tell you about Rayquaza. Tell him Rayquaza might be in the Sky Pillar. He'll take off and ask you to follow. Before you leave, you might want to stop by the Pokemon Center or Mart.

    Sootopolis City/ Route 128
To track the Rayquaza down, you'll have to go to Route 129. From Sootopolis City, go east until you reach Route 128, then head south to Route 129.

    Route 130/ Mirage Island

Route 130 is similar to Route 129. It's just a large stretch of water with some trainers bobbing in it. The difference between this and normal water routes is that sometimes you'll find a large island at its center. This place is called Mirage Island, and it's home to some roaming Wynauts, in addition to the rare Liechi Berry. If you score some Berries, be sure to plant them all over Hoenn... in areas more accessible than this peek-a-boo archipelago. Mirage Island rarely shows up, so take advantage of it if it does appear by capturing the rare Pokemon there. Of course, there are trainers on this stretch as well.

    Pacifidlog Town
Pacifidlog Town is an oasis of sorts in this long, long series of waterways. Stop at the Pok?mon Center to recharge your team, then visit the houses to grab some knowledge and goodies. The man in the southeast cabin is looking for Mirage Island. If he says he sees it, head east again and explore the island.

In the middle house, a girl asks you to trade a Bagon for her Horsea. Bagon are pretty rare, but so are Horsea. Your call. When you finish there, move to the house on the southwest corner of town. Make sure you have your best Pok?mon in the first position, then talk to the man here. If he thinks your relationship with your first Pok?mon is good, he'll give you TM27 (Return). If it doesn't, he'll give you TM21 (Frustration). You'll actually want them both. Talk to him again, and he'll tell you to return in a number of days to get a new TM. Mark it on your calendar! When you're done here, plop in the water to the east. Time to Surf to the Sky Pillar.

    Sky Pillar
Go east out of the town until you see a passage north. Follow that back to the west and you'llfind the Sky Pillar. Go through the first cave and Wallace will come talk to you and let youknow that he has opened the door. Make your way up the tower. On the fourth floor, drop through the floorto access the unreachable staircase on the third floor. Continue up from there. When youget to the Rayquaza, it will awaken and fly off! To catch Rayquaza, you'll have to come back after becoming the League Champion. Fly back to Sootopolis to see what is going on.\

    Sootopolis City
Go to the gym and talk to the Team Magma and Aqua leaders. Wallace will give you the HM 07 (Waterfall) and tell you to go fight the Gym Leader.

    Pok?mon Gym #8
    Prize: Rain Badge
    Gym Leader: Juan
This gym is stocked with Water-Type Pok?mon, so obviously the best cats to bring to play would be Grass and Electric types. But if you have a hefty, leveled-up Pok?mon who outstrips the Gym trainers by many levels, it can be a powerful force even if it's slightly off-type.

The area in the Gym is coated by a thin sheet of ice, and you can't step on the same square twice. In order to get up the next staircase, you'll have to touch each square on the floor once without touching any of them twice. Then, a staircase will appear. You can skip battles by strategically making your way across the floor. If you don't, you'll fall through and have to face everyone. To see how to go through all of the ice fields, watch this movie. Here are how the battles play out:

    First Level:

    Beauty Connie
    Goldeen: Level 40

    Lass Andrea
    Luvdisc: Level 40

    Second Level:

    Pokefan Annika
    Feebas: Level 39
    Feebas: Level 39

    Lady Daphne
    Luvdisc: Level 39
    Luvdisc: Level 39

    Third Level:

    Beauty Tiffany:
    Carvahna: Level 39
    Sharpedo: Level 39

    Beauty Olivia
    Clamperl: Level 35
    Corphish: Level 37
    Lombre: Level 39

    Beauty Bridget
    Azumarill: Level 40

    Lass Crissy
    Goldeen: Level 39
    Wailmer: Level 39

    Lady Briana
    Seaking: Level 40

    Pokefan Bethany
    Azurill: Level 35
    Marill: Level 37
    Azumarill: Level 39

    Fourth Level:

    Gym Leader Juan
    Luvdisc: Level 41
    Whiscash: Level 41
    Sealeo: Level 43
    Crawdaunt: Level 43
    Kingdra: Level 43

It turns out Wallace isn't the Gym Leader after all. In Emerald, you have to fight Wallace's teacher - Juan. A powerful Electric or Grass-type Pok?mon will destroy what Juan has to offer. In fact, almost any Pok?mon at level 55 or up will do serious damage to Juan's crew. As long as you aren't sending out Ground or Rock types to get chewed up by the array of Water Pulses, you should be fine. Drop a souped-up Pikachu on the party and watch them fall.

Once you are victorious, you will be given the Rain Badge and TM03 (Water Pulse). Now you'll be able to train all levels of Pok?mon, and you'll be able to use Waterfall outside of combat. Now that you have all of the badges, it is time to make your way to Ever Grande, to participate in the Pok?mon League.

Now that everything is back to normal, people are actually out and about on the streets. Return back down to the lake in front of the gym. From here, swim to the grassy spot to the right. Just up the stairs here is the Pok?mon Center. Move up the stairs to the right. Enter the house here and a girl with give you her Wailmer Doll.

The next house up is party to a couple of brothers having an argument about the size of Pok?mon. If you have a large Seedot or Lotad in your party, show it to them. If yours is bigger, they'll reward you with an Elixir.

When you're done with them, swim past the Gym to the grassy shore to the west. There, you'll discover a girl who will give you a random rare Berry. Grab it, then head up the stairs nearby and go all the way to the top of the city on the left side to find a house. Go inside to find a black belt who will give you TM31(Brick Break). It allows a Pok?mon to cut through defensive moves.

Note: If you want, you can go take on the Elite Four right now. Just skip down to the section about Ever Grande City. However, the Sealed Chamber quest will result in some great rare Pok?mon that may help youin your final hour. If you want to explore more, Fly to Pacifidlog Town and leave to the west.

    Route 132

If you're getting sick of random sea encounters, don't be shy about using Repels. Plenty of experience awaits battling trainers. There are several of them here as well.

In the following three Routes, you'll also have to battle hard currents. They will drag you around and prevent you from getting exactly where you want to go. You'll probably have to ride the currents several times to battle all of the trainers... like the one on the crescent-shaped island at the center of this route (Hint: approach from the bottom of Route 131):

    Fisherman Ronald
    Magikarp: Level 19
    Gyrados: Level 21
    Gyrados: Level 23
    Gyrados: Level 26

    Cooltrainer Darcy
    Pelipper: Level 33
    Camerupt: Level 33

    Expert Paxton
    Swellow: Level 33
    Breloom: Level 33

Hop on one of the currents on the northeast side of this reef. The lower one willtake you to a trainer. Come back by flying back to Pacifidlog Town and taking the northern route if you want to get the other.

    Blackbelt Kiyo
    Hariyama: Level 34

You can also battle a couple of trainers by taking the northern route. Ultimately though, you'll want to get to the reef with four trainers, and leave from the southwest corner.

    Route 133

Route 133 is also riddled with strange currents. There is a Big Pearl guarded by two trainers on the reef on the eastern edge of the route, and a trainer on an island at the center. In the southeast corner, you'll find a duo looking to fight. And along a reef in the northeast, you'll find a Star Piece, a trainer in the water, and another on the south face of the reef.

    Route 134

If you can, you'll want to approach Route 134 from the south. That way, you'll land on the little square of reef on the far east side of the Route. From here, Surf from the spot indicated in the picture to pass over deep water. As you see yourself over the dark blue, press A to Dive down into the Sealed Chamber. It's worth the trouble, guaranteed. Check out the section below for a description of the Chamber.

Explore the rest of Route 134. There are three trainers on the central reef/island guarding a Carbos, two swimming to the north, two on a small central reef, and another two on a reef to the west.

    Sealed Chamber
Once you arrive below, head into the cave to get inside the Sealed Chamber. Swim to the far end of the undersea tunnel. Here you'll find a message in code (well, really Braille). The mystery of the carvings lies in the next room, but we thought we'd give you a headstart, if you want. Highlight the white text below to see what the message states.

The first message states: GO UP HERE. Use Dive at this spot to surface inside the cave.

If you figured out the code, you'll find yourself in a cave. In this place, you'll find a series of carvings in the stone. It presents the entire code alphabet, plus symbols. The top two rows are ABC, DEF, the next row is GHI, JKL, etc. The two small slabs to the right are period and comma.

Once you understand what you're looking at, take a shot at the north message. If you don't understand, highlight the white text below to see the answer:

    The message states: DIG HERE.

In the next chamber, you'll have to translate a series of messages. Once you do, you'll be given clues how to unlock three previously unavailable locations: Ancient Tomb, Desert Ruins and Island Cave. If you want to cheat, here's what the messages say (Highlight the text below).

First row left: THOSE WITH COURAGE, THOSE WITH HOPE.
First row right: OPEN A DOOR. AN ETERNAL Pok?MON WAITS.
Second row left: BUT, WE SEALED THE Pok?MON AWAY.
Second row right: WE FEARED IT.
Third row left: IN THIS CAVE WE HAVE LIVED.
Third row right: WE OWE ALL TO THE Pok?MON.
Final row: FIRST COMES RELICANTH. LAST COMES WAILMER.

In order to get the message to work, collect the indicated Pok?mon and put them in their respective positions. Once you do, head to the locations--Ancient Tomb, Desert Ruins and Island Cave, and collect your rare Pok?mon.

    Route 128
Once your watery travels are over, it's time to go win the Pok?mon League Championship. Go back to Route 128 and head east to go to Ever Grande City.

    Ever Grande City
In order to get to Ever Grande City, you'll need to know the Waterfall move. Teach it a Pok?mon and surf up the waterfall to reach the grassy plateau. Make sure you stop into the Pok?mon Center to heal and juggle your team. Once you've gone there, climb the steps and move north to enter Victory Road.

    Victory Road

Victory Road will help juice up your Pok?mon for the battles you'll face against the league. Not only is it rather labyrinthine, but it also contains some tough trainer battles, and some tough roaming Pok?mon.

To start, loop around north, then west, then south to get to the steps that lead up to the ladder. Follow the ladder to the east, then go down the steps and continue down the path to find the first trainer:

    Cooltrainer Albert
    Magnetron: Level 43
    Muk: Level 43

When you finish with Albert, move up the path to the north, then scale the ladder beyond, and cross the pair of bridges to the east. Go down the stairs at the other side to snag the Max Elixir. Then hop down to the path and go west, climbing the other stairs to the next level. Wally will come battle you

    Trainer Wally
    Altaria: Level 44
    Roselia: Level 44
    Delicatty: Level 43
    Magneton: Level 41
    Gardevoir: Level 45

The Alataria and Gardevoir can give you problems, but if you're going to take on the Elite Four, you should have at least one very leveled-up Pok?mon in your ranks. Battle Types, and when you need to bring out the heavy-hitter, call on your superstar.

Follow the path up to Hope.

    Cooltrainer Hope
    Roselia: Level 45

Go down the ladder behind the trainer. Use Flash to illuminate this lower floor. You'll have to push some boulders aside to make it through the next part of the cave. Once you do, take the high path. Smash the rocks, then push the boulders aside (bottom one, south and top one, north) and follow the path as it curls around and heads south. Soon, you'll encounter this trainer:

    Cooltrainer Shannon
    Claydol: Level 45

When she goes down, continue down the path and climb the ladder, then follow the eastern bridge across to an up ladder. Go up and grab the PP Up, then return back downstairs. Leap off the ledge to the left. Then head north to meet this trainer:

    Cooltrainer Samuel
    Swellow: Level 42
    Mawile: Level 42
    Kadabra: Level 42

Continue north to get a Full Restore. Then go all the way back south, and hang a left to go down the ladder. On the bottom floor, head north to face this trainer:

    Cooltrainer Julie
    Sandslash: Level 42
    Tropius: Level 42
    Ninetales: Level 42

When you beat Julie, go north, Surf through the water and climb the stairs to the north, then follow the path east, then south to find a trainer.

    Cooltrainer Owen
    Kecleon: Level 42
    Wailord: Level 42
    Gravelerb: Level 42

After Owen, go north and climb the up ladder. This leads to TM29 (Psychic). Return to the lower level when you have it, and go down the stairs to the west. Surf across the water here, then climb the waterfall to the north. Leap off onto solid ground to face the next trainer.

    Cooltrainer Vito
    Dodrio: Level 42
    Electrode: Level 42
    Kadabra: Level 42
    Shiftry: Level 42

After he loses, Vito says something about his family. He's the last Winstrate! The one hinted at by that powerful family... Once you put him down, grab the Full Heal nearby. Then get back in the water and head to the west, then south down the waterfall. Go up the ladder in the lower area...or

If you want to face the final three trainers on this floor, at the top of the waterfall,go west. Loop around to find these trainers.

    Cooltrainer Dianne
    Claydol: Level 43
    Lanturn: Level 43

    Cooltrainer Felix
    Medicham: Level 43
    Claydol: Level 43

    Cooltrainer Caroline
    Skarmory: Level 43
    Sableye: Level 43

Once up top, you'll immediately face two trainers and will find one more to the west.

    Cooltrainer Mitchell
    Lunatone: Level 43
    Solrock: Level 43

    Cooltrainer Halle
    Sableye: Level 43
    Absol: Level 43

    Cooltrainer Michelle
    Torkoal: Level 42
    Ludicolo: Level 42
    Medicham: Level 42

Go back, then follow the path all the way south and then east. Here, you'll find a pile of rocks. Smash the rocks, push the left boulder down, then smash the second rock and scurry through. This will give you access to the up ladder beyond. Go up and follow the path across the bridge east, then go down the stairs and follow the path to the next trainers. Notice that some are hiding under the bridge.

    Cooltrainer Edgar
    Cacturne: Level 43
    Pelipper: Level 43

    Cooltrainer Quincy
    Slaking: Level 43
    Dusclops: Level 43

    Cooltrainer Katelyn
    Gardevoir: Level 43
    Slaking: Level 43

Once you beat trainers, keep moving north and head outof Victory Road. If you come back to this end section after winning the Championship, you can rematch Wally (in the spot he was located for Ruby and Sapphire).

Ever Grande City/ Pok?mon League Hall
On the other side of Victory Road (finally) follow the path to a large, beautiful building and enter. Visit the recharge counter to rest up your beasts. Then, check out the supply of uber-helpful goods at the right counter. Bring as much as you can possibly carry. Stock up on Full Restore and Max Potions, and bring a few Revives along for good measure. Here are the prices:

    Ultra Ball: 1200
    Hyper Potion: 1200
    Max Potion: 2500
    Full Restore: 3000
    Full Heal: 600
    Revive: 1500
    Max Repel: 700

Finally, organize your team. Read ahead to see what each of the Elite Four is filling their team with, and plan accordingly. If you have any, remember to bring Leppa Berries or Elixirs to help restore PP. This is a long series of battles and you don't want to be out of moves by the end. Good luck!

    Elite Four: Sidney
If you have a really beefed-up Fighting or Bug Type, you'll want to bring it along, as it will do well against all of the Dark Types Sidney packs. But if you didn't level up a Fighting Type, a good, strong mixed-bag team will work. If you've been leveling up a Mudkip all along, it will be one powerful Swampert by this battle, which will come in handy. Blaziken is a fine choice as well. Make sure you're paying attention to everything's dual type, so you aren't surprised by a strength in the midst of battle.

After the fight concludes, be sure to refuel for the next fight, and take a look below to see what's on tap for the next fight.

    Elite Four: Phoebe
Phoebe brings mainly Ghost Types to the battle, so any Ghost or Dark Types that you have yourself will be a serious asset, but only if over Level 40. If you have a Steel Type, bring it along to absorb some blows if you get in a pinch and need to heal. If you have a souped-up Sharpedo, it is the perfect choice for this fight (and some others in the next four), as it delivers strong Dark-Type and Water attacks.

Again, if you have a superstar original Pok?mon, you can weather a lot of this storm. Earthquake attacks work on the majority of this team, and you can drop them all with hardcore water attacks like Surf or Muddy Water. You don't have to play it by the book to win, but you must bring power.

    Shadow Ball: Ghost
    Faint Attack: Dark

    Elite Four: Glacia
Glacia is all about the Ice and Water Types, so the best you can do is bring some hefty Electric Types to the mix. Leave your Fire Types in the bag for this brawl.

If you don't have a lot of room in your six to diversify with Electric and Fighting Types, you can get away with slugging it out with a high-level Ice type of your own. I used a Walrein to Surf chunks of health away, then brought in another Pok?mon to finish things off with Earthquakes. It took longer than I would have liked, but it got the job done. Just make sure your Pok?mon are higher in level, or this fight could be over quickly.

    Elite Four: Drake
The last of the Elite Four, Drake is a specialist in Dragon Types, which will make your job difficult indeed. If you have a good Ice-Type, like a Walrein, it will go a long way to beating up on this crew. A high-level Gyrados is a good idea as well. However, as we've stated before, if you don't have room for twelve different types, you can tough it out with some regular garden-variety Pok?mon. If you have any powerful Pok?mon on you team that knows a Dragon move, harp on that, as Dragon types are susceptible to their own brand of damage.

    Shelgon: Level 52

    Champion Wallace
The Pok?mon Champion is none other than Wallace. Wallace fields a team of super-strong Pok?mon, but they are not invincible. Just make sure you keep switching Types, and don't get caught with a wrong-Type on the field. Don't get greedy. If you don't match up well, Wallace will make you pay.

If you selected a Treecko, the leveled-up Sceptile will be a superstar in this fight, especially because it has strong Grass-Type moves. Wallace has a lot of Water and Grass typePokemon, so if you bring one strong Pokemon each of each of those, you should match up nicely. Swampert is also a useful ally here, because you'll have a similar type of Pokemon as many of the enemies. Use any Electricity and Grass attacks as often as possible, and don't be afraid to use all the Items you brought. This is what you're here for! Rock and roll.

    Wailord: Level 57

Once you triumph over Wallace, you've done it! You're the Pok?mon League Champion. To savor your victory, travel around Hoenn and hear tell of your great accomplishments. Plenty of things await you, including rematches with trainers you've battled (see Trainer's Eyes), and the quest to fill your Pok?dex. You'll also be able to take on the Sky Pillar in its new form, explore newregions of the Safari Zone, and take on the Battle Tower. There is still plenty to do after the quest is done. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Congratulations. You are truly a Pok? Master.
